York Springs was originally platted as "Petersburg" within Latimore Township, but its real fame came from the York Sulphur Springs — Adams County's first summer resort, where 19th-century travelers from Philadelphia and Baltimore came by stagecoach to "take the waters." General George Washington and Martha Washington visited in the summer of 1799. When the town incorporated as a borough in 1868, it took the name York Sulphur Springs, later shortened to York Springs, to end confusion with the similarly named Littlestown.
At just 0.23 square miles, York Springs remains one of Pennsylvania's smallest boroughs, its resort-era grandeur long faded into a quiet residential community surrounded by orchard and farm country. All of it sits on the same limestone-influenced geology found throughout Adams County.
