Littlestown is likely the oldest town in what is now Adams County, laid out in 1765 by Peter Klein — fifteen years before James Gettys laid out Gettysburg and thirty-five years before Adams County itself was formed. German settlers called it "Kleina Stedtle" ("Little's Town"), a name later anglicized to Littlestown when the post office was established in 1795 to resolve confusion with a neighboring town of the same original name (now York Springs).
Sitting about two miles from the Mason-Dixon line, Littlestown grew steadily along the Gettysburg and Petersburg Turnpike (completed 1814) and later a railroad line built in 1857–58. That layered history left the borough with a genuine mix of colonial-era and 19th-century housing. All of it sits on the same limestone-influenced geology found throughout Adams County.
